The Hook Definitions: What is Abstract Art?
Abstract art, also referred to as abstraction, is art that uses line, shape and colour in a non-representational way - not accurately depicting reality.
Depending on the degree of abstraction used by the artist, art can be fully abstract and entirely independent from reality, or partially abstracted - obscuring reality.
Abstract art has existed for thousands of years, found in motifs in manuscripts, tapestries and architecture. A rise in abstract art occurred in the twentieth century in line with the rise of modernism in sciences, technology, literature and music.
